Do You Know Who Owns RCI?

Canceling Your RCI Timeshare

You might think that RCI is an independently owned timeshare exchange program. That would be incorrect. RCI is a part of the Wyndham timeshare program. It sounds dandy that you can exchange your points to travel to a different destination.

There are two real reasons RCI exists. The first is so that Wyndham can sell more timeshare by telling you, the customer, that you can travel the entire world. The second reason is so that Wyndham can scoop up more fees, as outlined below.

Increasing RCI Fees

Your annual allotment of points depends on three factors: your home resort’s popularity. Also, the size of your unit and type affects the value and the season in which you own.

RCI Points Fee (membership)

  • 1 Year $124
  • 2 Years $229
  • 3 Years 321
  • 4 Years $409
  • 5 Years $499

Managing Your RCI Points Deposits

Even though you already paid for yearly points, RCI charges you to save them.

  • Saving Fee $36
  • Extension Fee $95
  • Rental Fee $135
  • Points or Deposit Fee $49

RCI Points Protection

Designed to guarantee members a 100% refund on leftover points, but you have to pay for the privilege.

  • 1-2 nights $44
  • 3-4 nights $54
  • 5+ nights $6

RCI – The Good and The Bad

  • Good– Many timeshare developers include RCI memberships as a perk offered at the timeshare purchase.
  • Bad– RCI does require an additional yearly maintenance fee, separate from the resort maintenance fee you’re already paying for your timeshare.
  • Good– RCI offers exchange opportunities at resorts in destinations in every continent of the world. Choices of vacation types like beaches, casinos, and family vacations may entice people to buy timeshares to exchange with RCI.
  • Bad– RCI points expire. If you don’t use the points within three years, you lose them.
  • Good– From time to time, RCI offers special discounts and promotions.
  • Bad– These deals go quickly. You have to be fast to snag them. But usually, these specials are for places and times that don’t suit your life. Plus, if you’re not checking your account daily, you’re probably missing out. But who has time to do that?

RCI Class-Action Lawsuits

It is a well-known fact that RCI members have a difficult time when trying to find exchanges within the RCI system. The number one customer complaint is a lack of inventory for exchanges but more than open enough to rentals. Promotional emails are sent out to members daily, highlighting available rentals in coveted destinations while members try to exchange their points for those same destinations. So what does that tell you? That RCI rented out inventory deposited by members, instead of making them available for exchange. Of course, RCI has denied these accusations.

Consumer Affairs

Consumer Affairs is a website where people can post issues with companies. RCI has many unhappy customers. Complaints range from bad to scary. Examples of complaints on this site include:

  • Being promised the exclusive Red Week for ten years, but then not book their Florida resort during Red Week.
  • Exchanging at a dangerous, run-down property where bugs and wild animals roamed the premises.
  • Trying to book an all-inclusive resort only to find out they are far more expensive than booking online.
  • A family who wanted a Disney Cruise trade found out it was more expensive than booking through Disney. When they asked for a price match, RCI refused. Obviously, they did not feel valued as an RCI member.
  • A Wyndham owner checked into an RCI resort in the Grand Cayman Islands. As soon as they checked in, they were told they’d have to pay for electricity, resort fees, and taxes. RCI did not tell them of these expenses, nor did they offer a refund.

RCI Alternatives

Do you realize when you belong to RCI, not only are you paying RCI membership fees and additional booking fees, but on top of that, your timeshare maintenance fees, taxes, and other fees are still ongoing. Every timeshare company like Westgate Resorts or Sheraton Club Vistana lists their unused or unoccupied rooms on secondary sites like RedWeekEbay, and Armed Forces Vacation Club for a fraction of the cost owning.

Of course, most people don’t realize how easy it is to travel without being tied down to a restrictive timeshare contract. Far better deals than timeshare ownership are out there; you just have to know where to look.

  1. Vacation in Italy for $269 for the week.
  2. Finally, experience the Hawaiian Islands for $940 for the week.
  3. How about $359 for the week at dozens of popular destinations like Branson, Missouri, and Orlando, Florida?

The Easy Way Out

If you feel foolish for buying into the hype of timeshare ownership, don’t. You’re not alone. Roughly 87% of the 14 million timeshare owners in the U.S. are looking to get out of a timeshare contract. Certainly, getting out of an unwanted timeshare can be an incredible hassle involving lots of paperwork and your precious time. Success in getting out of by yourself is low. They don’t have much of an incentive to help you get out of your contract. You can write a letter requesting release from your contract, but chances are they will ignore or deny your requests.
